The home dogs enjoyed success last week and they have all season but that isn’t keeping the public from betting against a trio of home dogs this weekend.
Bettors are avoiding the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants and San Diego Chargers like a bad cold in the three NFL games attracting the most attention this week at Sportsbook.com.
“It’s surprising that the public doesn’t have much faith in the home dogs,” said Sportsbook.com spokesman Dave Staley. “Home dogs went 4-1 ATS last weekend and are cashing in at over 57% for the season.”
A total of 97% of the bettors placing money on the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins matchup are backing the Bills. At 4-4 straight up, the Bills have been a solid bet this year as they’ve covered the spread in six of their eight games. And bettors love them as a 2 ½-point favorite this Sunday.
“This isn’t surprising considering the Bills have won three straight and more importantly covered five in a row,” said Staley. “Of course, the fact that Miami is winless doesn’t give the public much reason to back them, especially when getting less than a field goal.”
The lack of love the 6-2 New York Giants are receiving is eerily similar to that of the Dolphins. Despite the winning record and the fact they’ve beaten the spread in five of their last six matchups, only 6% of bettors are backing the Giants in this week’s home game against Dallas.
The Giants, a 1 1/2-point underdog for Sunday, enter this game off a bye week and the home team is 11-5-2 ATS in the last 18 meetings.
“Although Dallas has been impressive this season, this high percentage surprises me a bit,” said Staley. “There may be some good value on this home dog.”
The other home dog getting no respect this week is the San Diego Chargers. After last week’s outright loss to Minnesota as seven-point favorites, it seems the public has lost faith in a team that entered the season as one of the favorites in the AFC.
So far, only 8% of the public is backing the Chargers at +4 ½ for this weekend’s home game against the Indianapolis Colts. The Chargers enter the game having covered the last two meetings against the Colts and three of their last four games this season.
The defending champion Colts have also been on a winning streak, covering their last five games this season.
The college football game taking in the most bets at Sportsbook.com is the matchup between the Michigan Wolverines and Wisconsin Badgers.
It’s another case of bettors betting against the home dog. Wisconsin, listed at +2 ½, has only received 5% of the action on this game.
After a strong start to the season, the Badgers have lost three of their last five games and they have beaten the spread in just two of their last seven outings.
The Wolverines are heading in the opposite direction. After a pair of embarrassing losses to open the season, Michigan has won eight straight and they’ve covered the spread in six of those eight wins.
A win by the Wolverines this weekend sets them up for a big showdown with Ohio State next weekend and a shot at a big BCS Rose Bowl berth.
