Tom Brady and the Patriots Super Bowl Favorites? Not so fast.

The oddsmakers in Vegas and at BetUS have the New England Patriots emerging as front-runners for the Super Bowl. Of course, this is all contingent on how good you think Tom Brady is going to be. After getting his knee obliterated in Week 1 of the 2008 season, Brady is back and is reportedly 100% ready to go.

“He looks great in practice!”

That’s what you hear from the scouting reports. You know who else probably looks great in practice? Chris Simms, JaMarcus Russell and my freaking mother (she has a canon for an arm). The fact remains that Brady’s injury happened on his pivot knee, meaning the knee that will be twisting during the 500+ attempts he manages in the 2009 season…if he makes it that far.

I’m not questioning his talent at all, nor the coaching genius of Bill Belichik. Not even close. What I am questioning is his resiliency to a time-tested injury that has plagued athletes for centuries. The closest comparison we could possible have is Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Palmer, who had a breakout year in 2005 had his knee dismantled in the playoffs by Kimo von Oelhoffen of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since then, Palmer’s production has dropped lower and lower. He went from a 101.1 rating in 2005 followed by ratings of 93.9, 86.7 and 69.0. The last season was a rating from four games in 2008 since Carson also had a recurring elbow problem.

And while the numbers don’t necessarily lie, they don’t tell the whole truth. Carson Palmer is not the same player he was in 2005. Not even close. He was a brash, superhuman gun slinger, fearlessly towering in the pocket and burning the skies with laser passing. Now, he’s just not the same. Granted, some of that has to be contributed to the abysmal state of affairs in Cincinnati, but Palmer has lost something in his pass, and is certainly not the same field presence he was in 2005.

What makes Brady different? He’s not even close to the athletic phenom that Carson Palmer is. Before his injury last year, he averaged 519 attempts a year. In perhaps the greatest year of any NFL quarterback, Brady shattered the touchdown record with 50 passing scores, 4,806 yards and a rating of 117.2. Randy Moss and Wes Welker will still be in Patriots’ uniforms next year, so the only thing that is going to change is Brady’s knee.

How will it effect his mental well-being? He hasn’t stood in the pocket with an actual opposing defense ready to bear down on him yet. Do you realize how many times the Patriots’ betting backers are going to vomit in their own mouths every time Brady is sacked? Is this a bad time to mention that the Patriots play the Bills, Jets, Falcons and Ravens in the first four weeks of the season? They also get the Titans in Week 6 and the Bucs in Week 7.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not banking on a reconstructed knee to win the Superbowl. Not when Pittsburgh is coming off a galvanizing year, and with so many question marks about Brady’s physical and mental strength in what will be his greatest test to date. If you’re willing to stomach the gut wrenching ride of Tom Brady 2.0, then be my guest. Just don’t come crying to me when your NFL betting bank, and Tom Brady, are left in the trenches without a leg to stand on.

NFL Future Odds - Early NFL Superbowl Contenders

The draft has come and gone and for NFL online betting fans it is time to once again re-evaluate the current betting lines on some of the teams in the NFL to reach and win the Super Bowl. As always, I will be looking for high-priced long-shots in the BetUS NFL future book online wagers. But, as you shall read, in some cases, there just isn’t a long-shot to be found in the respective NFL divisions.

I’ll start with the easiest division of all to pick a sportbook online wager bet from - - the AFC East Division.

AFC East Division

Without a doubt the two teams that helped themselves the most were the Miami Dolphins, by drafting OT Jake Long number one overall, and the Buffalo Bills who snagged CB Leodis McKelvin in the first-round. McKelvin will definitely help solidify the Bills point-of-attack on offense as he’s an excellent kick returner. The Big Tuna in Miami got a steal by grabbing Phillip Merling, one of the top defensive ends in this draft, late in the first-round. The Jets got Vernon Gholston, but he’s not enough for me to even consider a wager on them.

 

The team that still deserves our money in this division is the New England Patriots. Yes, Miami and Buffalo improved, but the Patriots are still heads and tails above either team in this division.

AFC North Division

Everybody is hot on the Cleveland Browns in this division. How can I blame them? The BetUS sportsbook has the online betting odds on the Browns to win the Super Bowl at 30 to 1. I wouldn’t argue against someone willing to take a stab on this team. But they really didn’t help themselves all that much in the draft. Yes, the Browns did get some value in the fourth-round, with their first pick in this draft, but Brady Quinn may or may not be the guy for them. That means that giving up this years first-rounder to get Quinn last year could prove costly.

The team that really improved in the draft was the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers, confident in their defense, spent their two picks on hot-shot offensive players, RB Rashard Mendehall from Illinois, and WR Limas Sweed from Texas. Mendehall, along with Willie Parker, provides the Steelers with a terrific backfield. Sweed will compliment both Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward to provide the Steelers

 

with three excellent weapons at the WR position. Big Ben should be very happy!

The Ravens took a big, huge, tremendous gamble by taking QB Joe Flacco in the first-round. Flacco could be good, but that aging Ravens’ defense needed some help at the CB position. They didn’t get it. The Bengals got LB Keith Rivers in the first-round, but they need much more then that to contend in this division.

AFC West Division

 

The team that definitely improved the most in the draft was the Kansas City Chiefs. They got three starters in DT Glenn Dorsey, OG Branden Albert, and CB Brandon Flowers, in their first three picks in this draft. But that’s not enough for this team to contend for the Super Bowl. They’ll need to solidify their QB position. I don’t think Bradie Croyle is the answer.

The Broncos picked up a good OL in Ryan Clady, but is Jake Cutler really the guy they want taking snaps? The San Diego Chargers don’t need much but I can’t recommend at BetUS online odds of 7 to 1 to win the Super Bowl when they couldn’t even get there last year.

Nope, the team that I think deserves the money in this division, and trust me, I can’t believe I’m writing this, is the Oakland Raiders. A backfield of QB JeMarcus Russel, RB Justin Fargas, and RB Darren McFadden makes them one of the most feared offenses in the AFC Conference. All three guys are play-makers. Someone will need to step up in their WR corp, but overall, the odds say that the Raiders deserve some dollars.

AFC South Division

This division is a mess. First, I love RB Chris Johnson out of East Carolina, but seriously Titans,

 

what are you thinking? You needed to give Vince some help in the WR position and you take a RB? The Jaguars traded all the way up to the 8th choice to take Derrick Harvey. That doesn’t make much sense to me either. Leodis McKelvin was still around at that point. And, again, let’s try to spread the field some - - shall we?

The Houston Texans took an OT in the first-round, Duane Brown, that probably won’t do much in his first two years. This team is constantly rebuilding.

Then, there are the Colts who grabbed the best center in the draft in Mike Pollak. The rich get richer. I’m going to have to put a sportsbook wager on the Colts.

NFC East Division

Everybody did well from the NFC East in this year’s draft. First, the Cowboys got two terrific players in CB Mike Jenkins and RB Felix Jones. Jones will complement Marion Barber in the backfield and Jenkins is just a playa. He could be a defensive star in the NFL. The Giants did well to grab WR Mario Manningham in the 3rd round. I don’t care what his 40 time was at the combine. This guy is going to love

 

playing with Plaxico Burress and Eli Manning. The Eagles did well with what they had. The real story with the Eagles is free agent Asante Samuels. If he’s good, then the Eagles will bounce back in the division.

But the real star from this division is the Washington Redskins. The Skins picked up arguably the two best wide receivers in this year’s draft in Devin Thomas out of Michigan State and Malcolm Kelly out of Oklahoma. They also took TE Fred Davis out of USC. That gives new coach Jim Zorn a lot to work with. My online betting wager will go on the Redskins in this division.

NFC North Division

There was nothing great in this division. Everybody was just okay or really bad in my book. Let’s start with the really bad. The Chicago Bears had twelve picks in this draft and didn’t snag a wide receiver or a quarterback. Their top pick, OT Chris Williams out of Vanderbilt, will be a Pro-Bowler in

 

the NFL. Too bad he may be blocking for Rex Grossman and Cedric Benson for a long-time.

At the least the Detroit Lions didn’t draft a wide receiver in the first-round. They just blew it by taking a so-so OT in Gosder Cherillous. They should have gone for Pittsburgh’s OT Jeff Otah at that spot. So, I’m going to say that Matt Millen failed again.

Both the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings helped themselves in this draft. I really like what the Vikings did by taking QB John David Booty in the second round. Booty could be a surprise. He didn’t have the weapons that Matt Leinart had while he was at USC and Booty does tend to force the ball at times, but the pressure will be off him at Minnesota. I think I’ll place an online wager on the Vikings.

NFC West Division

This is another mess of a division. The San Francisco 49’ers helped themselves the mos

 

t by taking DT Kentwan Balmer in the 1st round and CB Reggie Smith in the 3rd round. But this team needs to decide if Alex Smith is their quarterback. He doesn’t play like it all of the time. The Arizona Cardinals chose Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the first-round. Rodgers-Cromartie will start at CB this year, but he has one kidney. That’s bothersome to me. Football is extremely physical. I don’t know for how many years Rodgers-Cromartie will hold up. The Seahawks had a solid draft by taking DE Lawrence Jackson in the first-round. This team didn’t need much to challenge in the NFC. So, any help on that D-Line that they could get will

be well-received.

But the team that I thought did the best job was the St. Louis Rams. If you can get a future hall-of-famer at any point in a draft, then that’s what you do. Chris Long, if he stays healthy, will be in the NFL Hall-of-Fame. Yes, he’s that good. He immediately makes an impact on the Rams’ defense. If the Rams’ O-Line comes back healthy and can protect Mark Brunell and RB Steven Jackson, then the Rams immediately are a better team then last year.

NFC South Division

Every team in the NFC South Division helped themselves in the draft. The Atlanta Falcon

s did exactly what they needed to

. They took QB Matt Ryan with the 3rd pick in the draft. Ryan is a can’t miss prospect. He’s got all of the intangibles to be a star in the NFL. The Buccaneers took Aqib Talib in the first-round. This guy will be great for John Gruden’s team. The off the field issues don’t bother me because Gruden runs a very tight ship.

The Carolina Panthers drafted RB Jonathan Stewart out of the first-round. At first I didn’t like the pick. Then, I found out that it was the Panther’s medical team that preformed the operation on Stewart’s toe. That means something right?

Of course the team that did the best for themselves was the New Orleans Saints. Moving up in the draft to tag DT Sedrick Ellis out of USC and then getting CB Tracy Porter out of Indiana in the second-round means only one thing - - the Saints are serious about defense this year.

NFL Patriots vs Giants Pointspread Winner

They nearly ended all this perfect-season talk back in Week 17. The Giants led the Patriots in the fourth quarter, but let them off the hook in a 38-35 loss. Since then, the Giants have reeled off three straight road wins as underdogs en route to Super Bowl XLII where they will face New England, who has been underwhelming in winning its two playoff games at Foxboro.

They hook up in Arizona, where the UNDER has prevailed in the last three Super Bowls and the faves have covered two in a row.

Oddsmakers currently have the Patriots listed as 11½-point favorites versus the Giants, while the game's total is sitting at 55.

The Giants defeated Green Bay 23-20 in overtime as a 7-point underdog in the NFC Championship Game. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (40.5).

Lawrence Tynes connected on a 47-yard field goal in overtime to give the Giants the win. Eli Manning completed 21-of-40 passes for 254 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions for New York, while Brandon Jacobs rushed for 67 yards on 21 carries with a score.

The Patriots defeated San Diego 21-12 as a 14-point favorite in the AFC Championship Game. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (46.5).

Tom Brady passed for 209 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions for New England, while Laurence Maroney rushed for 122 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown in the win.

Patriots vs Giants Point Spread Winner

Well, after nearly five months of football, the biggest and most important game of the season is finally here.

That’s right BetUS.com NFL bettors, Super Bowl XXLII is finally here and the good news for bettors is that, after suffering through an absolutely mediocre ATS season, I have been on absolute fire since the start of the postseason, going a solid 7-1-1 ATS in my postseason selections, with several excellent picks the way, like the New York Giants’ outright victories over the Dallas Cowboys in their NFC Divisional showdown, followed by their Green Bay Packers in their NFC Championship tilt on Jan. 13 despite the majority of my handicapping brethren going with the Pack to win outright if not necessarily covering the 7.5-point spread that day.

Now, no one really cares abut past picks – unless they can help in the future that is.

With that in mind, I will once again – for the final time this NFL postseason – put BetUS.com’s beloved NFL bettors on the right path to a winning wager with my 2008 Super Bowl selection.

Since the game is quickly approaching, I’ll cut the chit-chat short and get right to the point.

Now, a lot of people may want to throw out of lot of meaningless statistics heading into this contest, but for me, this pick is extremely simple.

Looking at both teams and their recent performances, (including their hook up in their regular season finale), and I think it’s easy to come to the conclusion that, not only will the New York Giants, (13-6 SU, 13-6 ATS, 9-10 O/U) cover the 11½-point spread in this contest, but that they could actually beat the vaunted New England Patriots, (18-0 SU, 10-8 ATS, 11-6-1 O/U) outright.

Heck, I’ll go on record right now and say that if Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a similar game to the 21-for-33, 209-yard, two-touchdown, three-interception performance he unleashed on the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship game, that the Patriots will undeniably lose their first Super Bowl under Bill Belichick.

While the same could very well be said for Giants quarterback Eli Manning, the fact of the matter is that Manning and the Giants are playing their best football of the season coming into this contest while the Patriots looked invincible in the regular season’s early going but have shown more chinks in their armor down the stretch than at any time this season.

Once again, without getting into meaningless statistics, I believe this game will boil down to one crucial factor – winning the turnover battle.

I fully believe that, had the Chargers been able to capitalize on the Patriots’ many mistakes two weeks ago, they, and not the Patriots would be playing in this Super Bowl.

However, with injuries to quarterback Philip Rivers, league-leading rusher LaDainian Tomlinson and all-pro tight end Antonio Gates, the Chargers’ offense was a shell of itself as they were forced into field goal after field goal in losing 21-12 to the Patriots.

Analysis: I know the Patriots have won three Super Bowl titles under Belichick, but I am genuinely amazed that the point spread for this contest is as high as it is, especially considering the stellar brand of football the Giants have displayed over the last five weeks. While I certainly respect the Patriots and their accomplishments, I am certain the Giants will cover the spread – unless Eli Manning reverts back into his old, inconsistent self and throws two or three interceptions. Since Manning has legitimately looked like a quarterback that can lead his team to a Super Bowl title I his last four games, I see no reason to think he’ll come up with a stinker in this game. Take the Giants and the points NFL bettors and you’ll be happy you followed my sound advice once again. And hey, if you feel the need to share your winnings with me, that’s okay too.

As you might imagine, there are tons of Super Bowl XLII props to do with the one and only Mr. Tom Brady, super-stud quarterback of the New England Patriots and impregnator of super models extraordinaire. Pretty simple, but fun, as it will keep you on the edge of your seat for the final few plays, no matter what the score is. You can’t beat that kind of fun. You don’t want to go too crazy on these types of bets that you have no control over which side you want to pick, but throwing down $60 will win you $50 if you pick the right number. Not bad odds, when you think about it.

 

Number 638/639: On this bet, you simply pick whether or not Brady’s first pass will be a completion or an incompletion. Obviously, his passes are usually complete, but even Tom will have a few butterflies to start the game, so things even out. Let her make the choice and give her a $50 to play with. If she picks complete and it is, she’ll have almost $67 to play with on second half bets. If she picks incomplete, though, and it is, she’ll have a C-note.

Number 650/651: This one is the same as the last one, except she’ll be able to place it anytime before the start of the second half, and so she’ll know how much she has to play with by then, as the one from the first half will be settled.

There you go. You now have three wagers that will keep your Tom Brady luvin’ lady a kept woman right from the start of the game all the way to the final plays. This is assuming, of course, that she is not a real football fan. If she is, you are already a winner!

Superbowl Props

The Super Bowl has essentially become a national holiday and with it comes all the prep work one would expect to see for a holiday like Christmas. So like every year during the weeks before the Super Bowl, the can of theories has been opened for the amusement of us all.

One of the biggest theories has Wall Street hoping that the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots, even if only by one point. Legend has it that yearly stock market trends are predicted by the winner of the Super Bowl. If the NFC team wins, it’ll be a good year for the stock market. If the AFC team wins, it’ll be a down year. NFC odds for this theory are higher because a team from the AFC qualifies as an NFC team if it was part of the original NFC league before the 1970 merger.

This prediction method was invented years ago by Leonard Koppett, a sportswriter for the New York Times, and it’s been accurate 31 of 41 times.

Another Super Bowl theory is whether or not the coin toss winner will also win the game. In the last 11 Super Bowls, the coin toss winners have only won twice. The NFC has won the last 10 coin tosses but the last time an AFC team won, it happened to be the New England Patriots. Maybe luck will be on their side at Super Bowl XLII. This year, the New York Giants will call the toss as they’re the road team. They’ve never called the toss before but are 1-2 in Super Bowl coin toss wins. The Patriots are 1-4 in Super Bowl coin toss wins, but have called it twice and both times have called heads.

There’s another legend based on the premise of hype and that teams win or lose depending on how they handle the hype of the big game. The New England Patriots have appeared at the Super Bowl six times and the New York Giants four times. It may not matter that the Pats have more Super Bowl experience because they have been pretty hyped up all season and still haven’t broken under the pressure. The New York Giants on the other hand, although on a winning streak, obviously not of the same magnitude as that of the Pats, may fold on game day due to Eli Manning’s shakiness under pressure.

So will any of these game theories hold true? I guess we’ll find out come game day.

Superbowl Betting- Superbowl Props

The Super Bowl is by far the biggest game on the NFL betting calendar. Millions of people will wager for or against the New England Patriots covering a fat 12-point spread – already down from 13 at the open – against the New York Giants. Many will continue their annual tradition of pairing a sharp wager on the pointspread with one or more of the ever-growing number of Super Bowl proposition bets.

Just because these props fall under the category of exotic betting doesn’t mean you can’t apply some brainpower. If anything, this is where you can get an edge on the much less informed betting public. Consider these three popular offerings:

Will there be a safety in the game? (Yes +800; No –3000)

These rarities are a common trap for casual bettors. It’s easy to visualize a safety happening, but it’s far from an everyday occurrence. This happened to be an unusually busy season in the end zone with 18 safeties; that’s still 18 in 240 games, which would suggest 13.3-1 odds (vig not included) if you believe a safety is a largely random event.

 Will a kick-off be returned for a TD? (Yes +800; No –3000)

The most exciting play in football is a much more frequent occurrence: 25 kicks were brought back for touchdowns during the 2007 regular season. But this potential outcome speaks more to the skill of the individual kick returners. New England’s Ellis Hobbs and New York’s Domenik Hixon each brought one back to the house this year, so without taking the quality of the two coverage units into consideration (the Pats are good, the Giants not so much), you could generate a very rough estimate of an 8-1 chance there will be a kick return for a TD.

 

Will a punt be returned for a TD? (Yes +500; No –1000)

There were 17 of these scored in 2007, and four of them were by Devin Hester. Neither the Giants nor the Patriots scored one this year: R.W. McQuarters and Wes Welker have actually been slightly below average in punt return efficiency. Yet the payout is lower for “Yes” than for the more likely kick-off return. These are the kind of inconsistencies in the NFL odds you can find on the Super Bowl XLII props list.

NFL Superbowl Odds and Point Spread New England vs New York

The conference championship games are over, with the New York Giants and the New England Patriots advancing to Super Bowl XLII.  The Giants and Patriots will have to thaw out after defeating the Packers and Chargers respectively, in two of the coldest games in championship history.

Super Bowl XLII - New England Patriots vs. New York Giants. No matter who you ask, they will tell you they knew the Patriots would be going to Arizona soon after they made the trade for Randy Moss. But few people outside of New York would have predicted the Giants would be their Super Bowl opponents.

The New England Patriots are in the Super Bowl just like we all predicted. Starting the season as 5/2

 

favorites to win the Super Bowl, the Patriots crushed some NFL records along the way: most wins in a regular season (16-0), most points by a team (589), most passing touchdowns (Tom Brady with 50) and most receiving touchdowns (Randy Moss with 23). Brady and coach Bill Belichick received the MVP and Coach of the Year awards respectively.   

 

During the first game of the season, New York Jets coach Eric Mangini went to the league office with evidence of the Patriots recording the Jets defensive play-calling, a big no-no. The NFL punished the Patriots with three-quarters of million dollars in fines and stripped them of their first round draft pick. Instead of sticking their tails between their legs, the Patriots responded like a spurned lover and ripped the hearts out of their opponents, running up the score as if to say to the league: “So you think we need to cheat to win? Watch this.” The Patriots became the team you loved to hate. But no matter what other teams threw at them, the New England Patriots won every game they’ve played and are only one win in Super Bowl XLII away from absolute perfection.

The New York Giants came into this season having lost their starting running back to retirement and Tom Coughlin dealing with a fractured locker room, calls for his job and inconsistent quarterback Eli Manning, who had failed to live up to the great expectations placed on him. If you combine those factors with a defense with too many question marks, the Giants reaching the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl, would have been a huge surprise. Before the first game of the season, Bodog had set the Giants’ odds of winning Super Bowl XLII at 45/1. 

After being embarrassed by Dallas in the second game of the season, something happened. Eli Manning became a leader and started to display some of the pedigree that his name would suggest. Tom Coughlin’s team pulled together and showed camaraderie and respect for each other by playing team-first football. And then there was the defense, led by an aging Michael Strahan and youngsters Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, which began terrorizing quarterbacks to lead the league with 53 sacks.

New York finished the season on a 10-4 run, including seven wins on the road. The Giants have been road warriors all season long: After losing their first road game in Dallas, they won 10 straight road contests including three playoff wins versus Tampa, Dallas and Green Bay.

The New England Patriots vs. the New York Giants is going to be David versus Goliath, the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team versus the Russians, the Little Engine That Could versus the mountain. Who will win: Mountain or the Little Engine That Could?
